Fathers Incorporated and Furthering Fathering to combine several curricula through AFI
Atlanta, GA – In an effort to streamline its academic programming, Fathers Incorporated has created the Atlanta Fatherhood Institute (AFI). Through a partnership with Fathers Incorporated and Furthering Fathering, the AFI will combine several programs and curricula to better serve and educate individuals in the areas of responsible fatherhood, successful parenting, healthy relationships, and essential life skills development.
“Given the popularity of our educational programs, it has become difficult to conduct classes in multiple locations. Combining our curricula under one virtual entity—AFI and in one location–was the most feasible way to accomplish our goals and improve our outcomes,” says Kenneth Braswell, Executive Director of Fathers Incorporated.
The AFI will include courses and curricula on responsible fatherhood (Gentle Warriors and H.E.A.R.T.), effective co-parenting and communication (Dark Hearts), essential life skills (Next Level) among others. Two sessions will begin on January 8, 2018 at the University For Parents. “As we continue to empower under resourced parents with training, skills, and opportunities to improve the quality of life for themselves and their families, we are seeing tremendous improvement in the lives of over 200 parents who have participated in our Atlanta pilot program to date,” says Brenda Coleman, Director of University For Parents.
“The University For Parents is an ideal platform for AFI to deliver its evidence-informed and model-based curricula on responsible fatherhood. There are very few fatherhood programs in the region of Atlanta and we want to play a role in supporting them while providing an additional platform for agencies to refer fathers in need of services,” continues Braswell.
The University For Parents offers fall, spring, and summer classes and is free for parents, caregivers, non-custodial parents, guardians, grandparents, expecting teens, and foster parents. Free childcare and incentives to participate are also provided. The University For Parents, part of the National CARES Mentoring Movement led by Susan Taylor, focuses on helping parent learners become better mentors to their children. Among the courses offered are classes covering social-emotional wellness, leadership, literacy, parenting skills, reading and digital literacy, personal development, career readiness, nutrition, etc.
University For Parents classes are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00a.m.-12p.m. and 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. Registration for the 2018 spring semester will be open from December 15, 2017 through January 9, 2018.
